Ley is an old Saxon term for Leigh and its surrounding area: Haleigh, Thundersley, Rayleigh. It derives from  'clearing' or a piece of land put down to grass. A ley line can also be the line joining two prominent points in the landscape, thought to be the line of a prehistoric track.
